Sorry nothing is 'quick' in gardening! A good thick hedge will take a couple of years or more.
Can you post a photo please so we have some idea of the area you want to plant up.
How much you are going to spend as you can buy ready grown hedges but they are expensive.
No hedge has ever kept my dog in she will squeeze through the smallest gap so maybe you need to think about  adding wire netting first then your hedge.

I defo know gardening is not quick, the hedge is roughly 20mtrs long but did not want to plant Hawthorn just something that grows a little faster and gives some color.

We live in Staffordshire and as high as Leek so the weather is cold and always windy.

  • In my experience, as @K67 says, nothing will keep a pet in unless there is a suitable fence. This may be standard panel fencing, stock fencing, chicken wire, whatever works for your type/size of pet.

Something quick growing will probably want to be taller and wider than you would want it once it reaches and exceeds the preferred height. You could end up being a slave to maintenance.

What is everyone else growing locally as a hedge? Do you like native but dislike hawthorn because of the thorns? You could use non-thorny subjects such as Viburnum opulus, Acer campestre, dogwood, spindle, etc. If you want evergreen how about holly or yew?

@K67 can only agree with other comments and don’t think any hedges will keep pets at bay unless you weave chicken wire or similar between the plants whilst planting, most hedges take time to grow but you could consider buying larger plants and plant them closer together but obviously depends on your budget, personally I like beech as a hedge

There is a stock fence in but need the hedge now,  I was thinking of beach but daughter thaught of Red Robin which will also give color.
  • You may to consider a mesh fence on the outside and a nice hedge facing in to make it disappear. No pet would be stopped by a hedge alone.

Portuguses Laurel.........5 years to 4 foot tall but will not keep pets in.

Everyone is just trying to be Happy.....So lets help Them.
  • How about Pyracantha? Nice bright berries in autumn and winter and once established should be a good deterrent to anything moving through it.

Photinia Red Robin isn't the best choice for a windy exposed site.

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
