Plum identification help

We are looking to plant some plum trees. We are in the north east of England. Down the road are some fabulous plums growing at the side of the road. They are blue-black, with very nicely flavoured yellow flesh and fruited (up here anyway) in mid September.

Anyone got any idea what variety they might be? Mid September blue seemed to suggest Kirkes blue, but that variety seems to want a warm sunny site while these occupy a partially shaded (though sheltered) northern road side.

They are well established trees so have been there at least decades I think.
