Replanting in previous Leylandii location

I’m going to be digging out a couple of mature Leylandii and will be replanting with alternative shrub(s). The ground always looks devoid of goodness in these circumstances and I expect this to be the same. Is it a question of removing a decent area and replacing with some well-rotted mature or are there any other recommendations or things to watch out for?

Thanks

Don't remove anything except the roots and trees but do pile on loads of well-rotted manure and garden compost and leave it to settle a week or three before re-planting as levels will reduce fairly quickly and change planting depths for new shrubs and trees.  Water new plants well before and after planting and make sure you tease out the roots so they can head off out into the soil and nit just go round and round.
