Raspberries

Hi,

I have cut back our raspberries to the ground as I thought our raspberries were autumn fruiting (based on last year's crop). I noticed after cutting them, the raspberry canes had buds forming on them.

Would autumn fruiting old canes have buds forming on old canes now or would that suggest they are summer fruiting?

If they are summer fruiting,
will it mean that the raspberries will not grow again now I have cut them down?

Thanks,

Mark

I have both summer (Glen Moy) and autumn (Joan J) raspbs.
I did have a look at them both yesterday.
The summer ones have quite swollen buds and as far as I recall - the autumn ones also had buds but the buds were much smaller.
    But both definitely have buds.

Obviously the conditions where you are will be different to mine here in Essex, so maybe that's not much help.

If they are summer fruiting, then I'm afraid you'll get nothing this year, but the canes that grow this year will fruit next year

Yes, autumn fruiting canes will have buds on and if you don't cut them back, those buds will turn into side shoots which will bear an early crop.  However, if you do that, the main autumn crop is much reduced, so I always cut mine back (Polka) around this time.

Thanks both. I guess I will just have to wait and see.
