Hi all, does such a thing as a scented rhododendron exist? I think I have heard there is a yellow one with a scent or ami I imagining it? Any information gratefully received.
There's Rhododendron luteum, which is deciduous (good autumn colour) and is highly scented. That's probably the most well-known one.
If you have space the loderi hybrids have fragrance. This autumn I've planted Rhododendron loderi 'King George' and the later flowering (July, sometimes into August) Rh. 'Polar Bear', which can fill the air with its perfume.
There are other scented ones. Try Millais Nursery's www.rhododendrons.co.uk and filter the search criteria by scent and any other attributes you require. I had to buy my aforementioned rhodos from Burncoose Nursery as Millais had no stock. I was very pleased with the plants that arrived.
Rhododendron luteum is easy to grow...and yes scented. In the south it flowers before the leaves.Pics 1-3. In Scotland the flowers are later. So flowers and leaves can appear together.Pic 4 and 5. It is deciduous so the leaves turn a super colour in the autumn. The flowers are dainty... the common name would be an Azalea type.
Oooh that looks gorgeous! I am thinking of growing in a half barrel as I don’t have the right soil really and being in a rented house I like to keep my treasured plants portable! Thanks for the information. Will look out for that one.
