GREENHOUSE

How much sun do greenhouses of any type require? What is the best type for a medium size garden?

thank you

It depends on what you want to grow. I'd go for the biggest you can accommodate, it will never be big enough. And personally, I would not have a wooden frame because, although they look better, they take a lot more work to maintain.

  • @Posy is right that it does all depend on what you want it for. But having said that you do need a reasonably sunny spot. Ideally with sun for a good chunk of the day all year. Of course we don’t always have that so I would say always put it in the sunniest part of your garden.

For size, probably best thinking what you want to use it for. If it’s just for growing seeds and not growing plants/crops inside then a small one may be enough. I was originally going to get a 10x8 but OH persuaded me to go one size up to 12x8 on the basis that the cost difference wasn’t that much. I’m glad he did as I would now happily have a bigger one.

We use ours for growing annual flower seeds, a few tomato/cucumber and aubergine plants and then storing various pots over winter (dahlias, agapanthus, succulents etc). We also have a small peach bush growing in there and a grape vine. It’s very full 🙄🤣

Ours is a Rhino one in silver sage.

  • I would agree with the above. Choose the biggest size you can afford plus some, the largest size you can manage in your garden, in the sunniest place because you will always wish it was bigger. You can always shade an exposed greenhouse. When I moved I left behind a 12ft x 10ft greenhouse and find making do with a 6ft x 8ft one really hard.
  • thank you Butterfly 66 and Joyce Goldenlily for your valuable advice and information.
  • I have a 6 x 8 foot Rhino greenhouse which I’m very pleased with.  Needs virtually no maintenance and looks as good as new.
