Rather than start a new thread for a fairly basic question, I thought I'd just pop a query on the back of this if I may.
What are people's experiences of greenhouses with the door (or even double doors) along the length instead of the gable? That is the configuration offered to me on a 10x8 Elite but I'm curious about how workable it is against a gable-end door.
I do think you get more into a end door rather than a side one, but it does depend on the shape you need. Maybe air circulation is better, but as long as you have skylights too that's no problem. My only question is if you want a slightly warmer end, say for peppers, you wouldn't have one. Hope this helps @Astraeus
Hi all just jumping on this thread. I want a greenhouse and actually bought a second hand one but after many hours even my usually calm and patient fiancé is losing his temper. I think a new one would be easier but I can only afford polycarbonate. They Seem to get mixed reviews on here. Are they completely useless or good enough? Thinking of growing tomatoes and a pleasant place to pot on plants, sow seeds etc mainly. Opinions please?
Slow down, @debs64! Take a deep breath and have a cup of tea. Your second hand greenhouse will be much better in the long run. It's a pity you didn't get some good advice before you took it down because the trick is to mark each piece and record its position first. However, all is not lost. Have you got the frame up? Can you find a picture of the model you have? Go slowly, look closely at each piece - lay it all out so you know what you are working with - and have one more try.
How far has he got @debs64 ? It's difficult enough even with a brand new one and full instructions, so l appreciate his frustration. If you know which model it is that will be a great help. Don't give up just yet. As @Posy says, if he's managed to get the frame up he's on the way. With luck people on the forum might be able to help if you can post some photos.
Unfortunately the greenhouse was partially dismantled when he went to collect it. The frame seems to have been twisted and forced apart and nearly all the glass is cracked. The screws are rusty too. Not a good buy I am afraid! The man has the patience of a saint usually but is at the end of his tether and has offered to buy me a polycarbonate replacement. I just want somewhere I can go to do little jobs, seed sowing etc, store pots and compost etc and maybe grow a few tomatoes 🍅
Cracked glass needn't be a huge problem - rather than polycarbonate which tends to become brittle and discolour over time, you can obtain clear perspex sheets cut to your required size. However, if the actual frame is badly twisted it will make it awfully difficult ( as your poor OH has discovered ) as well as losing strength. I can well understand your disappointment - particularly at the start of the growing season when you've been looking forward to it. As you mention the various uses you have in mind, is it worth considering one of those half Shed, half GH ? There are various ones on the market. Best of luck with whatever you go for anyway
