Which variety of broad bean/sprout?

BigladBiglad Posts: 3,265
Afternoon all,

I'm planning to grow these for the first time and ordering from DT Brown. I'm down to Brenden, Trafalgar or Braemar sprouts and de Monica, Sutton or Luz de Otono broad beans.

I realise that they have different sowing/cropping times but just wanted to garner the experiences of you good folk re. productivity, ease of growing, taste and disease resistance. I don't have enough space to try all of them but WILL end up buying them all if I can't trim the list :o

  • I'm growing The Sutton Broad bean for the first time this year all I know is you have to pinch out the top to prevent black fly. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can advise 😊

I grew The Sutton last year and although I was late sowing I got a really good harvest, they stood up well even though we get very bad winds. I've grown Aquadulce (well something like that) this year as they are a winter variety
  • Don’t take the top out until the bottom beans have set. I then take the tops off and steam them... served with butter and black pepper they’re delicious.
