Early march sowing here, in a cold greenhouse (they can take weeks to germinate.) I usually use them to follow the early potatoes, so they get planted out around mid-August and harvested over the winter months. Allium/Leek fly is a growing problem in some areas and that can result in stunted plants which show twisted growth and splitting later in the season. I had last year off from growing them in an effort to reduce local pest numbers, but I think the growing enthusiasm for using alliums in the flower border (including me) is probably not helping.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
