Composting Brambles

Can you add chopped brambles to a compost heap, or is it better to create a separate pile just for the brambles? I'm in no rush to use the resulting compost. Thanks.

  • Hi

I would not put brambles on the compost heap. It is one of the few plants that I would not add. Any bramble trimmings go into my garden waste collection bin.
  • Perhaps I should add that it's probably a couple of skip fullsl

Brambles make good compost when put through a shredder and mixed with grass cuttings.  I wouldn't put lengths in, they will probably root.
  • What would worry me is there would be seeds in it.

I only get a few brambles popping up (courtesy of the birds dropping the seed plus fertiliser) but I put them in the council green bin. Too prickly to be wrestling them into the shredder.

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

I'd put them in a skip. A small amount, well chopped might be ok, but you have loads.

I put mine through the shredder. They chop up quite well, and then I can put them in the green waste bin. If I didn’t shred them , the bin would be full in a couple of hours!
