Paul's Scarlet hawthorn in a hedge

Hi does anyone know if you can plant Crataegus laevigata as part of a mixed hedge that would be kept to aprox 6-7' in height or does it have to be left as a standard?

thanks in advance

My mother in laws hedge was all Paul's scarlet and that was cut to about 4 feet tall, so yes is the answer. Flowered every year as well.
  • @Palustris Thank you for the info
  • Just check that you’re not getting one that’s been top grafted. 😊

Yes, very true. If it is sold as a bush form then it should be  all right. If it is sold as a standard then it would not work as a hedge. Sorry, never thought about the type of plant like that. The one we had was sold as a bush form so it could be pruned to the height we wanted.
  • Might be worth contacting Buckingham Nurseries and asking what size their bare root stock is. Unlikely they will be top grafted at this price https://www.hedging.co.uk/acatalog/product_10396.html

I like you idea and I may copy it now I've read @Palustris's comments.
  • @rachelQrtJHBjb Thankyou for the recommendation, they are much cheaper than others I was looking at. Their bare root stock is 1.2 - 1.5 M tall.

  • I've bought a lot of bare root hedging from them over the years. It's a bit difficult to see but this is my 12 year old hornbeam hedge planted with 2-3ft whips from Buckingham Nurseries. I've also purchased mixed native bundles, too.

I have just received my bare root double scarlet & double pink hawthorn and the trees are 6-7' tall and have definitely been grafted. Not ideal for hedging but I'm hopeful it will be trainable. They would both make lovely trees if I had the space.

I think I recommended giving them a call as well as looking at their website. I hope it works out for you.
