Woodworm in my apple tree?

Had someone to give me a quote for pruning my apple tree. It produces masses of large red eating apples. He advised me that the tree has woodworm and he told me it should be cut down and the roots removed. I’m devastated- is this possible? Thank you for any help or advice?

Unless the tree is dying or very insecure there is no need to remove it. Our Apple trees in a our last garden were riddled with woodworm (as was every other untreated piece of wood in the area). They produced masses of fruit and were as healthy as need be.
  • Agree with @Palustris . We have a very old bramley which the greater spotted woodpeckers love as it is so full of interesting food for them. It continues to produce an abundant harvest every year.

  • Thank you so much for your comments. Love my apple tree. Turned to a tree surgeon to make sure it’s pruned properly. Very grateful for your input.
