Foxglove seedlings

Good evening. I have around 100 foxglove seedlings which were sown in a cold greenhouse last November. They are ready to be transferred to individual cells now. The temperature in the greenhouse fluctuates and gets quite warm on sunny days. Would the seedlings be ok in a cold frame? Are cold frames frost free? Also the foxgloves are biennial. Will they flower this year (as they were sown in November)? Thank you for your thoughts. 😀

Hi Debora - they are really hardy, so a cold frame would be fine (to be honest I think outside would be ok too).  And yes, they should flower this year if they put up a rosette of leaves last season.
  • Thank you Chicky. 👍
  • Mine have been outside all winter although naturally they don't grow much. Some of mine are very small and I'd be amazed if they will flower this year but if they do great! If not there's always next year!

If you only sowed in November, it's unlikely they'd flower this year @DeboraWeldon, but they should grow to a good size and be ready for next year.
No need to protect them - once you have them to a reasonable size, start getting them outdoors and hardened off. You may lose a few, but most will just grow on, as they're totally hardy plants.
They don't need cossetting, but you need to take a couple of weeks to do that acclimatising, because you've sown them undercover as opposed to just doing them outside  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you so much for your help. I was concerned to the size of the seedlings when I transferred them today. The roots and leaves seem healthy but the stems are fragile and seem distorted. I am unsure to what is ‘normal’ as this is my first attempt. I don’t think the twisting is due to damping off as I have kept the seedlings on the dry side. Maybe that’s the issue ... time will tell.
