Seed germination temperatures

I have just come across this guide which might be beneficial to those with thermostatically controlled propagators or, indeed, a soil thermometer and patience.

  • Thank you very much for that @BenCotto, sounds like if i sow chilli seeds (indoors )I better wait a month or get a heated propagator!
Kindness is always the right choice.
  • The other thing is,  you need space and possibly heat,  to be able to move them into when you want to grow them on. If you start too early you can end up with a logjam of plants that you need to put out but the weather is still unfavourable.  Not easy to judge as every year is different.

I have a spreadsheet based on that wonderful website @BenCotto to which I have added average germination times and seed viability by age. Even with 2 propagators and an unheated greenhouse it is still a lottery, an exercise in logistics and requires a degree of luck.

As you say @Allotment Boy every year is different and given the tribulations of last year I say thank goodness for that!
