Dry Stone Wall

Hello all,

New subscribe to GW, new to the forums and, truth to be told, new to gardening really!

We moved into our house about 3 years ago but had so many projects indoors that we're really just getting stuck in to the garden now. We've made some plans and drawings and have an idea what we want to do....best laid plans and all that.
The back garden is over 3 levels and the bottommost level is 'held in' by 3 foot breeze block walls, topped with a 3 foot fence. We'd like to create a sort of raised bed here in the bottom corner - so the side and rear breeze block wall would form the side and back of the bed, and the pretty bit at the front will be made from granite rocks - a small drystone wall, if you will. We were thinking maybe 1 foot high - it's not Hardrians wall or anything like that, and might actually look to extend this across the whole of the bottom of the garden from one corner to the other (it's just gravel there at the minute - we've popped some planters in to break it up and add a bit of colour in the short term.

We've collected the granites rocks from a friend (hard work!) but they were in a pile in the shade so some are really grimy and black looking. Some gave loads of more on them but we quite like this and wouldn't look to clean those! Two questions:
1) What can we use to clean up the dirty rocks?
2) Any tips on building a small drystone wall?!

Thanks in advance - and apologies for the long post!!

Brodie  :)

Borrow or hire or buy a Karcher pressure washer.  It uses plain water under pressure to blast grime and slime and moss etc from surfaces but be careful near painted surfaces as it can lift paint.

Have a look at these links for how to build a stone wall

  • Thanks @Obelixx - I set to work with the power washer yesterday and they're coming up a treat. During cleaning a neighborhood came over and suggested bleach - he's used this on his granite wall and it's made a huge difference, but his wall is just that - a wall - and there's no soil, plants, greenery or anything involved and I didn't want to risk bleach when my rocks will be coming into direct contact with the soil the plants are growing in.

Thank you for the web links as well - doesn't look too complicated.....but we'll wait and see...!!!!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Don't forget to post some pics!  You're right about bleach - deadly for soil organisms and plants and would stop your stones getting a natural patina from lichen and so on.

  • This wee guide has some handy info on dry stone walls if you're looking for more, which might help: https://www.engineshed.scot/publications/publication/?publicationId=691877c6-bed8-4803-bdd1-a59500bb2828

  • Just had a look at the wee guide @rosehenderson90 - my favourite part is "construction and repair are complex tasks which should not be undertaken lightly"  :open_mouth:  :D  @Obelixx it might therefore be a few weeks until I can post a picture but I'll be sure to keep you both updated. I've around 200 rocks in the garage so there's no going back now...!
Thank you for the input guys, especially the info - greatly appreciated from this amateur!

Haha yes, I think it is designed for bigger/taller boundary walls to last hundreds of years so I'm sure you'll come up with something great and it won't need be as complex as that guide says :);)

I did a little drystone wall workshop once where we built a very low temporary wall in a group and it was great fun so enjoy! I also look forward to seeing the results
