Pyracantha - Leaves turning reddish brown

Hi,

My pyracantha's leaves are turning a reddish brown. The plant was planted in late Autumn against a south facing wall. I'd welcome any views on what the problem could be, and what steps I should take next! Thanks in advance.

It might just be a seasonal response to temperature changes or it may be the beginning of fireblight.   I suspect the former but have a look a this link on how to look after pyracantha as it includes cultivation needs plus potential problems and how to deal with them - https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/popular/pyracantha/growing-guide

I would be inclined to weed thoroughly all round the plant to a diametre of 90cm and then give it a mulch of well-rotted garden compost and/or manure to help retain moisture and add nutrients to the soil and I would release it from those canes and train it along horizontal, tensioned wires attached to the wall behind at 30cm intervals and using vine eyes so that air can circulate.    Loose ties will hold it without strangling it.

Let us know how you get on.

I have plans to plant some in this new, to us, garden as it is so good for pollinators and birds.  My last garden had almost annual "beasts from the east" so my efforts there failed.
