For me with my back, the trick is to never let them go down to the ground in the first place - they go from the car to the wheelbarrow to a bench or stack of pallets or table or very raised bed etc...

Our local garden centre will deliver and the man who brings them will place them where you want them. They don't charge for delivery and have always offered this service. (I gather that the demand has been much greater this year!)
I bought an enormous pot 2019 and the delivery man carried it to the top of the garden and placed it precisely where I wanted it.

Totally agree! Once they are on the ground they become a deadweight and much harder to move. One method to lift bags on the ground with a conventional wheelbarrow is to tip the wheelbarrow on it’s side, long edge lined up with the long side of the bag then roll over the bag into the wheelbarrow. You now have the bag in the barrow but on it’s side. Bend with your knees and lever up the whole barrow, bag and all.

Sack barrows are very useful for heavy objects; some have a bigger platform than others, which may be important when you want to move something like a large planter.  (I'd get a proper sack barrow rather than a shopping trolley - my shopping trolley is great for shopping but has a 20Kg weight limit and relatively lightweight frame.)
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

This year, I bought compost online from Wickes and the delivery person took all the bags to the back graden through the side gate and neatly stacked them. He even left a bag vertical, ready for use. Very helpful person  .

Agree but they certainly don't make shopping trolleys like they to, think mine is over 25 years old!

A four wheeled sack trolly? Some have a largish platform which is low, and then use the compost straight from the bag?
Otherwise you could get a lift arm fitted to the side of the house or shed and a pulley block to lift the bags high enough to cut them open above your wheel barrow.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Where is a design student when you need one?
  • I live in a long long row of terraced houses, and the compost has to come through the house from the front door.  A cream carpet too!😵   getting older so it will soon become an issue,a foldable trolley would help, one of those that cleverly does steps.
