how can i identify this plant?

  A crocus, and if it's this advanced this early, I'm betting on one of the varieties of Crocus tommasinianus. They are lovely.

  certainly rain battered, though the flowers are mostly still safe in their cocoons - or whatever the plant equivalent of a cocoon is.
