Is Fatsia Japonica poisonous to Dogs?

I am seeing conflicting information, Gardeners World site says that the plants are not toxic to dogs, but I have read elsewhere that they are highly toxic. I have just bought 3 new plants for my garden, but worried about planting them out now. Would be grateful for any advice to a reasonably novice gardener. Thanks.

Don't worry about it. It's related to ivy so it might cause a tummy upset if eaten in large quantities but.... that's not really likely to happen, is it? The lists put out by dog charities are ridiculous - I'm just looking at the Blue Cross's list - it puts Lavender in the category of "very poisonous to dogs and can even be fatal". This is absurd!

Unless you have a dog that just eats all and any plants it comes across, I wouldn't really worry about toxic plants in the garden. Dogs tend to avoid them anway.

    That does sound mad!

Must confess, we have two dogs and in our last garden there were all sorts of aconitum and other supposed nasties but they were never daft enough to eat them.  This new (to us) garden is a blank canvas and I will plant what I fancy knowing they won't eat them.

The only plants they chew in the garden or on walkies are long grasses.

Yep Cody only eats goose grass (he's welcome to it if he finds it in the garden!) and lush grass. He will go for Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster', I have to keep an eye on that!

My cats prefer the ornamental grasses too.
