Rose height

Can anybody explain climbing rose heights please.  If I want a climber to go against a 5' fence, what is the maximum height I should buy? Can I just train the excess height sideways along the fence  or would that not work?  Could I for instance plant an 8' rose against a 5' fence?  Does anybody have any examples they could possible show me?  Thanks everyone

    Hi, yes what you've suggested is correct. The height is roughly the length of the canes, so if you train them horizontally then height becomes width.

    You will get more flowers by training the stems sideways along the fence as it encourages the flowering side shoots so you want one that will give you some height and then as said the width of fence you want to cover

    Absolutely you can.
    I have a moonlight rose which is about 10ft high, but some of the branches are 15ft+ that grow sideways.
    Branches that grow (or are trained) sideways will produce many, many more flowers than branches that are upright.

    The rose is planted next to the red flowered weigela in the foreground and you can see the long branches that run into the distance. All the white flowers in the pic are from that single rose plant which goes beyond the purple smoke bush
