Pond and re-lining advice

Hi guys,
We have recently moved into a new house, which has a pond, well two actually, next to each other with a pipe linking the two that the fish could swim through. Our neighbours said it used to be beautiful, but the chap we bought the house off, long story, basically ruined them, he smashed all the garden up, and he had thrown everything in the ponds. I have managed to dig them both out, but there isn't any pond liner in them. The edges of the pond are all rough stone that has been cemented together, so ideally you would put the liner under the stone and build the stone on top of the liner? My question is, how can I put the pond liner in without having to dismantle all the surrounding walls, also the pipe that links the two ponds would need to be watertight, otherwise water would just run into the soil. I hope all that makes sense? I will attach a picture to give some idea of what I am talking about. Any feedback would be much appreciated, thank you in advance!!

IMHO if you try to "repair" it without properly dismantling the stone surround, you won't get a " level" .
I can't see how you'd line it without have the top completely flat.
I think it might just look like a " bodge job " .

  • Thanks for your reply Hostafan. The picture looks worse than it is, as some of the stones on top are ones I have dug up and not fixed. I am saving them to help rebuild the wall after, as I thought that is what I might have to do. As for the pipe connecting the ponds, I don't really have a clue how you would make that watertight, I will have to look further into it...

maybe just line the two ponds and forget about the pipe?
    Or make one, bigger pond?

I'd go for a new, MUCH bigger single pond, well made, and well lined.
Re-lining an old one might just be covering up previous mistakes?

    Agree about dismantling and rebuilding.

The swim-through: nick a hole in each of the two pond liners (narrower diameter than the pipe) and stretch the liner over the pipe. You could add a flange beforehand and then tighten that down and use some PTFE tape but, without that, it is a recognised way of fitting a pipe into pond liner. See here: https://youtu.be/GaUDJ64v0wM
  • Thanks a lot for your info everyone it's much appreciated. I wanted to keep two ponds as I have seen pictures and spoke to my neighbours, as they used to work in the garden for the previous lady who owned the property, but I will take the old stone off and make a decision from there. The ponds have had all the electric wires cut by the new jealous partner of the lady that owned the house. The new holes I have dug I might just use to bury him in them :] There is no time limit as it's going to be a while before everything is up and running. The cost and labour doesn't really matter, as I will be doing the work myself and I will enjoy bringing this old property back to life, inside and out.
Thanks again everyone, and stay safe..
