What's wrong with my new lawn?
Laid this lawn last summer with good quality lawn and top soil. Initially took really well, but over winter it's been struggling a lot.
I think the issue is down to lack of direct sunlight. Due to the position of the garages at either side, the lawn gets virtually no sunlight at the moment.
Is this what the issue might be, or is it likely to be something else?

I'd take all that area round your tree away anyway - it'll benefit the tree, as having grass growing right up against the trunk is never a great idea, and the grass is competition for the water and nutrients your tree needs. You can always plant some spring bulbs or some lightweight groundcover to improve that section. Or just put a mulch of bark or compost down.
The tree will also cast shade, and grass doesn't do very well in that kind of site. Shade of any kind will encourage some moss, but that can be remedied later in the year
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
There are things you can do t improve the health and vigour of your lawn but not until March/April. You certainly don't want to be tramping all over it whilst it's wet or frosted as that will just compact the soil and damage the grass.
Have a look at the articles on this RHS link. You'll find them helpful - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/garden-features/lawns
