I have a cheapo monocular too. It's great to just put in your pocket. Very light and about 4" long.  I bought it in M& S gift department one Christmas.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Think of lens size and how large/compact you want.

I have two pairs, both are perfectly fine for their intended use.

One is a second hand RSPB branded pair that are small and compact, 8 x 40 lens, these live on the kitchen worktop so if I see birds in my garden when making a brew I can grab them for a look.

I have a larger £50 pair of Olympus 10 x 50 that sit on the sideboard next to my armchair, for when I see birds in the garden when watching TV etc.

Consider lens size, the Olympus above have 10 x magnification and should supposedly give a larger view with the 50 size lens. However, I notice little difference between them and the 8 x 40 size. Greater the magnification the greater the wobble when hand holding, unless you have image stabilisation.

If I was going out purposely to see birds I would probably buy something different.
