Very Tall Houseplant

I am moving house. I have a house plant that is pushing against the ceiling. Is there a way of cutting it back so it does not get damaged in the move. I have attached a photo as I do not know the name of the plant either.
Any help appreciated.

  • I think it's an umbrella tree

It is a schefflera aka umbrella plant. You can prune it down to any suitable height, personally I would take off at least 2/3rds which would encourage it to bush out. They get very leggy when they don't get enough light. It wants to be in bright light but not direct sunlight.
  • Thanks for the info. The picture does not show that 2/3 up it is quite Bushy. I will cut it back to move it.

You can plant the top section you cut off and it will probably give you a new plant. Maybe just the top 6 inches or so. From one umbrella plant, i've grown another 3 from cuttings from the original. They seem to be quite easy to propagate. I simply stuck the cuttings into a fresh pot of compost, and left them to get on with it.
