Planning ahead

Hi all, I had some success last year as someone getting back into it. Hopefully this summer I can visit family again which I do each year and normally five weeks away. Vegetables will be impacted though, any thoughts on what to grow from March to July and what I could leave untreated during that period?
Take care all

Do you mean vegetables that can be left for a long time, or just planting in general?
    It's not very clear  :)
Your climate will also be a factor.

  • Vegetables that could left for a long time. I'm in East Midlands so normally hot summers. Thanks

Not my area of expertise I'm afraid. I mainly grow lettuce, mange tout and a few other things, and the tomatoes need to be indoors here, so they need regular attention.
Others may be able to suggest something suitable, but if you have long dry spells, an irrigation system would probably be needed. Lettuce certainly needs moisture on a regular basis. Many plants will bolt if they get too dry.
I grow wild rocket which is quite easy, and that might be worth trying, as it doesn't mind drier conditions. Potatoes and carrots are fairly easy, but they still need attending to at times - earthing up for potatoes for example.
You may also need further protection from wildlife - netting or a proper cage system, but most veg will need some care.
It also depends on what you like. No point growing anything you won't eat.  :)

The main problem I can see is that March is a bit early to be planting most things. You could try carrots and parsnips both will germinate in cold soil (it takes a while though) Onions and leeks are also both options. If you were leaving later I would suggest any of the cabbage family, broccoli and winter cabbages etc, sweetcorn.. basically anything that you only harvest once and that you harvest after July.
  • Thank you both, much appreciated!
