Raspberry Pruning

This week I was given a pot which had ten raspberry canes in it. They have never been planted in the ground so I am trying to separate them so that I can give them the space they need in a raised bed. There are five new canes coming from the bundle. I don't know if they need cutting back now. They are starting to sprout. They are Malling Admiral Raspberries. I hope that someone can advise me. Thank you.

Hi @woodhams2398.  Malling Admiral is a late summer fruiting raspberry, and ideally should be planted 40cm apart if you can separate them.  Provided they haven't been in the pot too long, it shouldn't be much of a problem...  The advice from the RHS is to cut them down to about 25cm after planting, so that they produce strong shoots from the base; you won't get any fruit until summer 2022, because they'll flower and fruit on the canes they grow this year.   :)

You could leave those new canes on if they don't get damaged in the separation process. They might fruit this year. But it's something of a compromise because the roots will grow better if you cut them back and forgo fruit this year.

  • Thanks for your help. I have spent most of the afternoon 'combing' the roots out and they are very good so I think I will try to keep the canes that have grown. Not all of the original canes are going to be viable.
