Young apple tree

Hi.  My apple tree is 4 years old now and had lots of growth the first few years.  Last year it didn’t grow much and the leaves were sparse.  I know I should probably prune it but I’m not sure how or when.  Any advice would be gratefully appreciated Thanks

  • I also have a cape fushia and would like advise on pruning this too.  Thank you.

I don't know about apple pruning, but having the grass so close to it will be affecting its vigour. I suggest clearing the grass from a bigger circle around the tree and mulching with something like garden compost or well-rotted manure, then keep it clear of grass and weeds.

    Hello @Hollyhocks1,

Young apple trees need formative pruning which is done when the tree is dormant.

I agree with Jenny that you need to clear the grass from around it and mulch.
