Prunus Frilly Frock - pruning

Hi,

I have a frilly frock ornamental cherry tree and don’t know how to or how much to prune.

it weeps well and last year new growth was formed on the long branches as small side off shoots.  These don’t weep as such and they get caught up in each other in the wind.

I read somewhere to hard prune after flowering but I don’t know the definition of “hard” - is this take off all the beaches back to the “trunk”?  I really don’t want a stick remaining for the summer but if that’s the way to do it I’m happy to give it a go.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

  • I'm surprised about the advice to prune hard--cherries are prone to fungal diseases that get in through wounds, so in general the recommendation is not to prune them. But I see that this is the advice on several websites for this variety.

The principle behind the pruning would be twofold--firstly to remove any reverted shoots that are all green instead of variegated, secondly you'd want to remember that new shoots should come from the top of the branch not the underside. So I'd prune (if I had to) with a diagonal cut into the old wood, perhaps no further than 6in from the point where the branch springs from the trunk, and just beyond a healthy outward-facing bud. You should also take out any dead growth at that point.
