Chillies dilemma

Has anyone got suggestions for the best way to grow my chillies and peppers as I know they are better the longer the season they have.
I have a large greenhouse which is I heated.I have a six foot table in their and I have enough heated mats coming next week to cover the table.when would be the best earliest time to get my chillies and peppers growing,I have propagater lids to put over them also.
im concerned about when they have germinated and growing will the heated mats be sufficient for them to carry on growing ok with the trays still on the heated matting although the air temperature in the greenhouse will be cold, if this makes sense.
sorry for the long winded post.
I did wonder about getting a paraffin heater to use for the worst of the weather.
I live in the New Forest to give you an idea of weather conditions generally.
thanks.

I am planning to sow my chillies in the next week or sow using heated mats on a south facing windowsill to provide bottom heat and encourage good germination and the light should help the seedlings grow strong and sturdy.   Once the seedlings get to a few inches high I shall pot them on into individual pots on trays in our polytunnel and using plastic bottles with the bottoms cut off to make individual cloches for a bit of extra warmth.

I would advise you to wait another couple of weeks till light levels are better so any seedlings don't get etiolated (stretching and weak) and make sure you have cloches ready to maintain a warm air pocket round your seedlings.

Have a read of these links before you start.

Me too.  Sitting on my sowing hands at the mo cos I know they'll catch up and be sturdier for the wait, even here where, in theory, we have warmth and light levels a bit sooner than you.

  • Don't be impatient. I don't sow my chillies till mid-Spring (Brazil!). Must have heat, humidity and very strong light, though not necessarily direct sun as they dry out very quickly. Good luck!
