What are your favourites and successes grown in partial shade?

I have been gradually widening a border and would like some inspiration as to what to put in it. My garden is West facing and the border is in partial shade on chalk. I do love evergreens but would love to hear your suggestions as to what does well for you. Many thanks.

    HOSTAS  :D
    Devon.
  • I have less experience of chalk. In general terms, it does depend on what look you’re going for. I have certainly found some plants that aren’t on the standard lists of shade plants but which are excellent both for leaf textures and flowers. Here are some personal favourites:

    Roscoea ‘Blackthorn Strain’
    Hellebores
    Sarcococca
    Aster schreberi
    Hardy Fuchsia
    Geranium nodosum ‘Hexham Big Eyes’
    Cyclamen, snowdrops, ferns

However, I’m gardening on heavy clay, so not all of these will be applicable.

I planted a new shady border on chalk last September..it’s a bit early to tell what the successes would be...the hostas and geraniums I planted haven’t done as well as I thought..but hopefully will do more this year.

I planted one area in the corner with ferns and a tree fern has put on a lot of new fronds already.

Also a alstroemeria (Indian summer) has done well to the point it might be straying from vigorous to thuggish, but it’s a lovely plant.

Hopefully in a couple of years I’ll have a much better idea :) but in the few first months those two seem to have out performed the others for me.

oh I should mention bluebells I pull them up by the fist full in that area and always seem to have loads!

Brunnera Jack Frost grew well in my limestone garden in part shade, so did campanulas, some hardy geraniums, Hostas, cyclamen, snowdops, Autumn Anemone, Honorine Jobert - but they aren't evergreen. Hellebores grew well and they are evergreen, but don't have summer flowers.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
