The photo posted above by KeenOnGreen of the pyracantha grown on an old house reminded me of this type of cotoneaster that I think is growing against an old estate house near where I live and could be an option. I just have it growing as a normal shrub but it can be trimmed easily to various shapes and it has flowers that are inconspicuous but popular with bees, berries that have good colour and the leaves take on some interesting colours over winter. It also has no thorns which might be an advantage over the pyracantha.
