Flower free rose.

I have had  a standard rose for 7 years. For the first 5 years it flowered beautifully. For the last 2 years, not a flower. I feed it in spring, summer after flowering and in autumn, just like all my others which flower well. Last year upon advice I pruned all the tips off in early summer and fed it, but nothing happened except lush leaf growth.
any ideas please?

    Can I see two ‘main’
stems? One coming from below the graft?  I think that is the problem. The rootstock has taken over.

I would scrap that plant and replace it ... taking measures against rose replant disease.

  • yes there are two "main" stems, the younger one coming out about 8" from the ground. I think you are right, I will scrap it and start again.
    thank you very much

In future, if a standard rose develops shoots on the stem they need to be removed ... either rub the bud out with your thumb or, if they’ve grown bigger you can grasp them and tug away and downwards to remove the growing point.
