Spring Mulch - Gro-Sure Farm Yard Manure

As a spring mulch, is it okay to mix blood and bone fertilizer pellets with the manure and some compost as a mulch? Or will the mulch of compost and garden manure be enough?

Or should I add fertilizer later on top of the mulch in summer?

Thanks so much in advance.

  • It depends on what you are mulching, but I tend to use gro-sure FYM annually (on its own) and have excellent results.  Bagged manure is effectively a balanced slow release fertilizer which also improves soil structure and helps the soil ecosystem.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • The standard advice is not to add FYM and fertiliser at the same time.  Manure can be a little on the acidic side, so may "react " with the fertiliser.  Best to wait & top dress later in the season.

Then there is the advice for roses!
David Austin recommends a feed in spring, then water if dry followed by a mulch of your choice which includes well rotted manure.
Advice I follow but roses are tougher than soft stemmed flowers.
