I'm wondering if it's time to go for a clematis.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

:D I do shout at it often and suck my teeth and roll my eyes. And I do chuck handfuls of fertilizer. The roses that do come seem pretty healthy, just there is just one short cane, and it gets on my wick, partly because I messed up the pruning early on. I'm actually quite impressed that it's alive at all.
So you’ve done everything I’ve suggested except cut it back to three dormant buds ... so what’ve you got to lose? 😉

I will try that Dove. I will give it another season and then have a re-think.

I would do what Dove said. Give it a chance to sprout from low down.

    Even a sprout showdown.
Maybe it will choose redemption.  I give most plants one last chance - unless I take agin em  . EBM  being a case in point. I decided it was beyond redemption. Phygelius also died by the sword.

Yes. It's so out of favour I don't even write its name in full.😉

Try a root drench of seaweed extract and see if that helps stimulate some base growth. The usual application advice is every 10-14 days during the growing season. Worth a shot?

    I think in this case anything short of a 12-bore is worth a shot @Omori 😉 🥀
