J shaped carrots

A few of my carrots this year have grown in a J shape, I have dug down to see if there are stones causing this but no. Can anyone suggest a reason please? TIA.

Most likely cause is a hard layer in the soil, it doesn't need to be a stone just a layer that is harder than the rest, normally right below where you dig or rotovate down to.
  • Thanks Sandi, they are planted in raised boxes which were just built during lockdown and are deeper than the size the carrots are growing to. The soil is loose and some carrots have grown to a really good size.
  • Maybe it's uneven water supply and the the roots are just following where the moisture is- hard to tell for sure.

  • Thanks A B I'll see if I can make sure that doesn't happen this year. Thanks both for your help.
