HELP ! Moving home with a few of my beauties -

Hello happy gardeners , I’m due to move home at the end of February/ beginning of March. I have agreed with my buyers I will be taking a few of the plants I can’t bare to part with. These are 3 rose bushes , a magnolia bush , Christmas Rose , Hydrangea and a small camellia.
Does anyone know what I should do to move these abs when would be the the best time as I’m worried about frozen ground etc.
My original plan was to dig them up this weekend as it’s warming and pop them in some spare large pots , insulate them and put them near the house. And when I get to my new house keep them in the pots for a few months until I’m ready to start the garden.. or it’s warm enough.
Any opinions or help on the the prep qwould be welcomed!
Thank you 😁

What you're planning sounds absolutely fine. I think with anything really well established and large, I would dig it up as late as possible before the move, and plant it as soon as poss in the new place - even if you just plant it in a temporary position while you get yourself sorted.

  • Thank you for your reply ! So maybe I should wait until mid feb to dig them all up. I was just worried the ground would be frozen , as February always seems colder than Jan ..

I wouldn't gamble on frozen soil in Feb so dig them up as soon as you can while the ground is good and get as much root as possible on the shrubs.   Make sure the pots are large enough and you fill up gaps with good compost because roots will start growing almost immediately.   Keep them sheltered and fed and watered as needed until you're ready to plant out in their new home.
