Onion sets

Hello,

Can you store onion sets over the year or are you better just buying new each year?

If you can store them, is it best to store in the garage?

Thanks

Onion sets for planting?  No.  They're like other bulbs such as daffs and tulips and so on.  They will try and grow and then wilt and wither and die if they're not in the ground or pots or troughs of compost.

    Thanks Obelixx

Yeah, onion sets for planting. I always get more than I can plant out.

Grow them on in small pots till you have space or offer them to friends or put them in a window box near the kitchen and use the green shoots as spring onions.  You won't get adult onions that way but all will not be lost.

  • I give my spare ones away.  Alternatively, plant the spare sets close together (eg in a pot) and harvest the leaves which can be used like spring onions.
