Sloping garden

Hi, our garden, at the back of our house, slopes down towards it,and also slopes to the right.
Sadly,we have never been able to sit out in our garden. When we have rain, the lawn near our house gets really muddy. At the moment it is mostly lawn, with borders at the end of the garden ( highest part)
I'm looking for a way to solve this, without spending a fortune please.
A programme focusing on sloping gardens would be great.

Any kind of drainage or levelling solution will involve either a lot of hard manual labour or money and probably both.  How about looking at it in another way and moving your seating area to the high part and making a path to it, so you don't have to walk on any boggy areas, and grow plants/shrubs/trees in the lower boggy area, as those will take up water for you.
PS: This website is not directly connected to the TV programme (it is by the magazine publishers), so you might want to try facebook or similar if you want to contact folk connected with the BBC TV series.

  • Thank you Bob. We are planning to have a seating area at the top left of our garden. This is the most level part. There is 50cm difference between the highest and lowest corner, where we’d like it. What would be the best material to use, for making a path on the slope please? Id have to chose any plants really carefully. There are pools of water, in the lawn, near the house, and it’s in the shade. I’d have to plant something fairly low growing, so it didn’t block our view.

  • I'm a big fan of gravel or crushed rock paths.  You would need to dig out the base to about 3 to 4 inches deep, lay landscape membrane and some form of edging (not required for a less formal look), then the gravel or crushed rock (this then needs compacting.)  If you choose gravel, the best stuff for walking on has 6mm or smaller particle size.
