Fruit tree fungus

Hi, newbie here.... to the forum and to gardening. Weve just moved house and now have a karge garden and 10 fruit trees (species unknown as only seen them in winter, def some apple and pear). One is smaller but appears to be diseased, am hoping someone might recognise the fungus in the photos! Advice really welcome!

  • Thanks.... I am Near to Stroud in gloucestshire. Certainly have some of those on old ash tree which has been decaying on the ground (a couple of hundred metres away), but this one is definitely a little fruit tree - will read up on them. The other fungus is in a split which runs to bottom of the trunk...

The first picture looks like young Phellinus pomaceus If that tree is a plum tree I would be almost certain of that. It won't kill the tree but it does weaken in.

  • Thanks Skandi, very helpful - it does indeed look very much like that, and I think it may well be a plum. Also seems like that it can also cause the white mould lower down the trunk in conjunction (which wraps around under the bark) - sounds like the tree could continue to survive, it does have a lot of dead wood on it but also some new shoots with buds. Question is whether the spores could spread to adjacent trees hence whether to remove this to reduce risk to adjacent tree ... does not appear to be much info online!
