I've used masonry paint on wood and also plain emulsion, watered down a bit for first coat then finished with decking oil.
There are quite a few all surface paints, Zinsser Allcoat is one, comes in white and yes black! You can get it colour mixed as well but is more pricey.
  • My first thought on seeing the arch was for an auricula theatre
  • It would lend itself to an auricular theatre wouldn’t it! I’m a little wary of having too much space that needs filling with smaller pots as I feel like they’re more upkeep to maintain and refresh every season, I think definitely a row of small pots of some matching things along the ledge would be cool tho.

Maybe I could rig some kind of flexible shelving in the alcove that could come down when the theatre is out of season. Hmm.

For easy-care small-ish pots you could have sempervivums. West-facing should give them enough sun.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Re paint, Cuprinol Garden Shades works on concrete and brickwork (as well as timber of course).

  • Oh yes thanks for the sempervivums idea, I guess that would go for succulents in general? Maybe this could be a place for houseplants to have to their summer holiday.

Thanks v much for the tip with Cuprinol garden shades as well
