Peas

I planted these in Nov they have grown happily in an unheated greenhouse. Just noticed they have flowered, do I
leave the flowers and plant out?
leave them and remove the tops?
Any advice would be great thank you

  • Good sized plants. Having never sown any in Nov not sure that they would last outside with the weather being so cold at times. Can they stay in the greenhouse? You may need to self pollinate the flowers though as the pollinators wont be around. Use a cotton bud or small paint brush and take the pollen from one flower to the next.
Be interested to see if you have pods and seeds develop.
Our unheated polytunnel has been brilliant with more carrots sown and salad crops at the end of the year. All doing well but never thought about peas...maybe give it a go next year.
  • Agreed I wouldn't put them out now as they will be too tender.

  • Thank you, I will pollinate them and see how it goes.

I'd assume if it's warm enough for them to be producing flowers at this time of year [you must be somewhere very mild!] it's worth just letting them carry on and see if you get some pods.
    Fingers crossed.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

You can always pinch the tops off and eat those if you don't get any pods and the plants get to big for your space in the greenhouse.
