Covering grass

I need to cover a 3x2m area of grass with gravel. Can I cut back the grass as short as possible, cover with cardboard and then cover with thick landscaping membrane and then add a decent covering of gravel (2 inches depth)?

    No need for the cardboard, just the landscaping material will do.  2 inches is a good depth for gravel.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
