Photinia Scab...?

We took delivery of 7 Photinia Red Robin pleached trees on the 10th December 2020. The trees were planted the same day.

The ground was well prepared, with additional compost for new trees and Rootgrow for each tree.  The garden is South West facing so gets the sun all day.

Roll forward a few weeks and marks started appearing on the leaves.  I cannot remember if there were any marks on the leaves when delivered.

I contacted the Nursery we purchased them from, and this is their response:

_______

The horticulturalist has had a look at your pictures and his comments are below:

As they have travelled and been re planted followed by some fairly changeable weather patterns they will show some signs of trauma however I don't see anything that would give cause for alarm.

They are likely to moult those leaves and take on fresh new growth come springtime.

Existing well established plants/hedges are never as affected as newly planted younger plants.

I hope this helps and offers some reassurance to you but of course do please keep us informed at any time if you have any further concerns in the coming months.

I have made full notes on your order to this effect.

_______

We have an existing Photinia Red Robin on the other side of the garden which is over 10 years old and does not have any of the marks on the leaves as shown in the attached photos.

From the initial research I have done it looks like the fungal infection, Photinia Scab.  The problem with that is that, from what I read, once they have it, it never goes away.  The leaves may drop, and new growth come through, but it will come back regularly, some bouts worse than others.

Or, is what their horticulturalist said true?

I just have this feeling I am being fobbed off.

All help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

  • So I went to my local garden centre this morning and spoke to one of their horticulturists.

To my relief, it is perfectly normal and not a disease.  The lady explained everything in detail and then showed me some of their Photinia Red Robin, which had exactly the same markings on the leaves.

Also told me how to prune correctly to create a screen.  Feel very relieved as the thought of replacing those trees filled me with dread!

Hope this is useful for anyone else with the same concerns.

  • Pleased to know you have a good Garden Centre with knowledgeable staff. Both there and the original nursery are quite right in what they have told you. Photinia are renowned for developing the leaf spot shown in your photograph.

    Thank you yorkshirerose  :)
  • What a relief! Glad to hear that it was nothing nasty. They look like lovely trees, I hope they have many healthy years ahead of them.
