Something strange in the garden

Does anyone know what these could be. Not sure whether they are an insect eggs like ant eggs or whether they are seeds collected by mice / squirrels. They seemed to be in a hole and went deeper into the ground, although I couldn’t investigate how deep as I had 3 toddlers with me and didn’t want them to eat them. Thank you 😊

Yes, I think they’re sunflower ‘hearts’ without the harder outer shell ... they swell a bit and go soft in the wet.  They could be a cache by a field mouse or similar, or they could be a spillage when someone was  filling a feeder  or similar.

  • Ah yes, they do look like sunflower seeds. We don’t have a feeder or any sunflowers so I think it must be a winter collection for one of our many field mice! Many thanks
