Growing Gunnera

I live in Atlanta GA.  The USA.  I would like to begin growing Gunnera for a dramatic look in my garden.  I know nothing about this plan and how it will survive.  I have seeds from an on-line source

  • Hello
We have never tried to grow from seed...we feel that this would take too long for us now adays.
We have 2 plants. One is in a sunken area that is fed from an overflowing pond.
The other is further out and not so damp.
The frosts here hit them every year but they do come back.
They are covered with their leaves over the crowns hopefully before the frosts (but not always).
The link maybe of of interest
Enjoy as they are fabulous plants to have in a large garden.

  • Welcome to the forums.

Not aware what temps you get in Atlanta.
Here they do not like cold...pics 4 and 5 show  wigwam of old leaves on top of plant to protect the crown.
They love wet soil, edge of ponds, streams.
    Gunnera manicata grows enormous.
There are other tiny Gunnera sp.

    This should help - https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/8136/Gunnera-manicata/Details

They need a lot of space, can cope with heat as long as their feet are damp at all times and they are quite frost hardy as long as you protect the crowns, especially when small.  You can do this by folding over spent leaves in late autumn and then piling on a barrowload of garden compost to keep out the frost.
