Plum Trees

My allotment has had problems with drainage this last 2 years and my plum crop has been negligable, is this because my trees are stood in water in the winter.

  • It won't be helping, that's for sure.  My own plum and gage crops were very poor last year and I put it down to the unusual weather patterns in 2020.  Apart from one or two exceptions, crops were generally low on most of my other types of fruit trees, too.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • My black currants had the same problem but only the ones stood in water for a couple of weeks.
  • Our orchard fruit trees are in clay soil and whilst they had a wettish winter we then had a very very dry spring/summer. Fruiting was not good for the plums and gages.
It didn't help that the small crops were taken by the birds before they had even ripened.
Hopefully this year will be a better harvest.

Do you only have the one? If so, it could need a partner to crop...

  • I have 2. The trees are 6 years old and fruits well until 2 years ago when they got leaf curl also it affected my adjacent blackcurrant Bush. Do you know if I should spray them and with what. Malcolm.
