How quick do you need to be?   It takes 10 mins to cook rice in a pan once the water boils.   You can get changed and set the table or a tray in that time.

I make a large batch, spread it out to cool quickly and get it into the fridge within half an hour.
Next day, I put it in a large bag and freeze it flat. When it's frozen, knock it about so that the grains separate. You can then grab a handful of two whenever you want. You can microwave it for boiled rice or chuck it in a wok for fried.
I cook my rice in a large amount of water, drain it and let it test for a few minutes.  Much easier than the let it soak up the water method.

The depth of winter is the worst time to try and turn over a new leaf.  The cold and rain and darkness make us want to sit indoors and eat starchy, fatty food.  It's easier to start a new diet or exercise programme, or give up a harmful habit, when the days are long and the weather inviting.  Why not make resolutions on the summer solstice rather than New Year's Day?
  • The fetishisation of new year's resolutions in this country is a very odd one. Not something we used to bother with when I was growing up in Athens. They seem to operate on the mechanics of self punishment which is a far too northern European a notion to ever entertain in my life. With the pandemic blowing up to smithereens my work sector, all I'd wish for myself and partner would be to continue to be happy and to make lots of new starts, including the inevitable false ones in order to find a way out.

Probably has its origins in the pagan past. The start of longer days in the North must have been long anticipated when huddling around a fire in a primitive hut. The far North of Scotland can be dark almost all day at times in winter, and making a resolution/prayer to the gods, might have seemed like a good idea. Hogmanay in Scotland was our winter holiday. Christmas was just a normal working day until it became a public holiday in the '70s.

I think the spring equinox is a more sensible time for resolutions and a positive time for sowing seeds, planning new features, cleaning house and home, healthier diet, more exercise tho any time of year is good for resolving to be kinder to oneself and others.  I do agree about the protestant hair shirt thing but it's such an easy mentality to fall into when it's cold and dark for so long and you don't believe in confession to and absolution from earthly beings in long frocks.

@Balgay.Hill - Christmas Day 1958, Boxing Day 1974. But you certainly got your own back by forcing us the have those dreadful Kenneth McKellar/Andy Stewart programmes on New Year’s Eve.

That's only 15 minutes and not prime time.

Having said that, it is many decades since I've watched either a Queen's speech or an NY Eve show.
