How to get rid of moles

I think moles are digging up my lawn and beds. How do you get rid of them?
Thanks

Hi Julia and welcome to the forum.
https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=203 This may be of help but as someone who battled with a mole for some months, I sometimes think luck is involved. The mole may move on to a neighbour's garden if you are lucky. Some people swear by garden wind spinners as the vibration is supposed to deter moles but I doubt that they produce enough disturbance to keep the little furry creatures at bay. In desperation we bought one and the mole did move on but I think it was headed for pastures new anyway.
Good luck with your mole quest.

juliesathia  Yes, as Pansyface says there are other posts on this subject that may fit the purpose but, depending on where you are, shooting them can be effective.
  • What a dreadful idea, shooting them! I hate to say this, as I hate the beasts, but dogs are an excellent mole repellent, especially the terrier types.

I’d rather shoot one than see a terrier rip it apart.

  • They don't kill them. Moles are too smart, they know the dog is there and move elsewhere.

We have moles.  We have 2 dogs, one of which is a terrier of some sort and a good ratter.  When she was younger she'd try and dig moles out when she heard them tunnelling in the Belgian garden but the only damage done was craters and trenches in our grass.    The moles did not move on then and French moles are no different it seems.

We also have 2 cats and one is a good hunter who very occasionally deposits a dead mole near the back door but not more than one or two a year.    She never eats them and nor do the dogs and I don't think carrion birds do either as I've lobbed the corpses where they could see them and eat them safely and they've ignored them.

I don't see how you could shoot a mole unless you have X-ray vision and a special gun or endless patience and exceptional aim since they so rarely come up for air.

There are professional mole catchers and there is even a register of recognised mole catchers so you know you're getting someone who knows what they're doing.

Obelixx  https://forum.gardenersworld.com/discussion/1046978/r-sawyer/p3 will show you how to shoot a mole if that's your preferred method.  My post is near the bottom of that page but, rest assured, I've done it three or four times?

No thanks.  Guns are definitely on my list of unnecessary items in a civilised life.

Your choice, of course, but a legal option nevertheless.

Lots of things are legal but not necessarily morally defensible.
