Wild garlic

Hello all. Does anyone have any tips for controlling / eliminating wild garlic? Many thanks in advance.

  • Is this our native wild garlic ... Allium ursinum aka Ramsons, or the Mediterranean introduction, Allium triquetrum, sometimes called ‘wild garlic’ but more often known as the ‘Three-cornered leek’?

@fagankandj   I'd love some if it is the Bear's Garlic.  I have been trying to establish a plot (from seed) since July - to no avail!!  Couldn't find any bulbs to plant in Autumn.

Yes @tuikowhai34 , the good stuff doesn’t like this garden, whereas the dratted three cornered leek has made itself very much at home in two borders 🙄

@Dovefromabove   Is that what I know as onion flowers?  Very "wild" in their smelly ways!!

Harvest the fresh leaves and make pesto and soup.   The plants, like many early spring plants will die down leaving space for other plants to follow - hardy geraniums and other good perennials and bulbs.

I brought some here from a friend's garden in Belgium when we moved here but it didn't like it so now I'm trying the 3 cornered leek thingy which has very pretty flowers and a suitable mild garlic flavour.

  • Allium triquetrum is apparently the botanical name.
  • And yes, also called ‘Three-cornered leek’
  • Ah ... I thought as much ... not the much sought after Ramsons native wild garlic then.

Allium triquetrum is much more tenacious ... all I can suggest is what I do ... pull it up when weeding, using a hand fork to loosen the soil so you can pull out the bulbs ... and snip off the flower heads and bin them before they set seed. You won’t beat them but you may keep them on the back foot 🙄
    Good luck 🤞
