Chitting my potatoes

Hi All,

I'm new to growing my own veg and want to grow potatoes this year. Could someone give me advice on when it's safe to start chitting my first earlier, second earlier, and maincrop potatoes? Also any potatoes they would recommend to grow. I tried Charlotte in a container as an experiment later this year and got potato blight. This year I'll get a chance to use an allotment so want to try more.

Thanks

I start chitting mine one month before they are due to be planted, when you can plant them depends on where you are.

  • ok thanks, going to order my seed potatoes over the next couple of weeks so will do a bit more research on types.

Pop into your local "Cafe " and ask them to save their egg trays / boxes for you to collect so you can chip .

  • I always chit spuds, regardless of type, as soon as they arrive from the suppliers.  That is done to avoid them growing long weak shoots in storage.  They go in an unheated but frost-free area with good light that doesn't ever get above about 15C until the spring.  The most important thing is to keep them cool before planting so they don't grow long weak pale shoots while still in the bag/box.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I concur completely with the above.

Last season mine, kept in the shed, received a lot of mice damage. I shall be more attentive to the issue this year.

Do you water potatoes when chitting them?

No they don't need any water at this stage, water (or a very damp area) will encourage them to grow roots which isn't what you're after.
